The name "Knob Noster" is said to be unique and shared with no other city in the world. There are several stories as to its origin. Some believe its hills are Indian burial mounds and that the name is a corrupted Indian name.
Another version refers to 2 families named "Noster" - one that lived in town and the other living on the hills. The family on the hills were called the "knob Nosters" to distinguish them from the city Nosters.
No matter what the case, the name became official in 1856. By 1863 the railroad arrived. The economic climate was changed by 1870 when coal was discovered west of town.

However, the boom was quickly over by 1880 when the mines were cleaned out. Other industries followed and a brick factory was built in 1885 that supplied quality bricks all over Missouri.
In the 1950s the Knob Noster economy was greatly influenced by the arrival of Whiteman Air Force Base. Its vibrant infusion of military personnel continues to this day.
The nearby bustling community of Whiteman Air Force Base is home to over 14,000 military members. One of the Air Force's premier facilities, Whiteman supports the 509th Bomb Wing, Missouri Army National Guard, 442nd Fighter Wing, the B-2 bomber and numerous logistical and service units. The base draws visitors to the area with tours and the annual Wings Over Whiteman Air Show and Open House.
